Q: |
Where did you get the idea for Al Capone Does My Shirts? |
From a newspaper article in the San Francisco Chronicle about kids who grew up on Alcatraz when Alcatraz was a working penitentiary. |

Q: |
Was the stuff about Al Capone true? |
That's a hard question to answer. All of the facts about Al Capone are correct, however. Moose is a totally made-up character. So, Al Capone could not have had any interactions with Moose because Moose didn't actually exist. |

Q: |
What happened to Moose, Natalie, Piper, Theresa, Annie, Jimmy, and Scout after the book ends? |
I don't really know. Once I'm finished with a book the characters stop telling me what they're doing. |

Q: |
Why did you make Piper so mean? |
Piper is mean and extremely manipulative, but she is also enterprising and full of interesting ideas. I would like to tell you that I've never met a mean person in my whole entire life ... but alas that is not true. The world of my books reflects the world as I know it. |
